A Documentary About Immigrants Living In Minnesota
Reasons for Moving is a short documentary film that poetically connects immigrant experiences and bird migration. It features footage of the performance of the same title alongside testimonies by Monica Bryand, Executive Director of the Urban Bird Collective, senior immigration attorney Alexis Dutt, and scholars Ernesto Cappelo, Arjun Guneratne, and Roopali Phadke.
Performers are Kalala Kiwanuka-Woernle, whose mother fled Uganda as a child and later came to the United States on a student visa; Mai Moua Thao, born in a refugee camp in Thailand; and Skye Reddy, whose family lost their ancestral homelands in the colonial Partition of South Asia. Performers and interviewees contribute personal stories and professional knowledge to tell us about different experiences of immigration, displacement, and resettlement.
Minnesota has long been home to immigrants from the four corners of the world, and the Mississippi Flyway makes the state a major route for bird migration. Reasons for Moving puts the natural world, familial stories, song, and dance from diverse heritages in close conversation.
